Printer-friendly version

A population-based cohort study in BMJ highlights the aspects of the Mediterranean diet that appear relevant to mortality risk.

Subjects: 23,000 healthy Greek adults were interviewed about their dietary habit, these persons were followed for 8.5 years. The following was observed:

    • high consumption of vegetables, fruits, nuts, monounsaturated fats, and legumes.
    • moderate consumption of alcohol;
    • low intake of meat
    • But, high intake of cereals, fish, and seafood — and low consumption of dairy products — showed little effect on mortality.
